FluteWorks Presents

The Flute Makers Series

Tradition. Inspiration. Community.

Have you ever wondered why we choose the flute makers we represent? Each brings a unique history, distinctive voice, and dedication to craftsmanship. And just as no two makers are alike, neither are the musicians who play their instruments. At FluteWorks, we believe finding the right flute is about more than choosing a brand. It's about discovering an instrument that complements your individuality, responds to your musical expression, and inspires you to grow. Join us as we celebrate the artistry behind these remarkable instruments, the people who create them, and the musicians who bring them to life.

Maker Spotlights

Muramatsu instruments

10/24

Muramatsu

In 1923, Koichi Muramatsu crafted his first flute, pioneering modern flute making in Japan. His dedication to excellence was carried forward by his son, Osamu, and grandson, Akio. Today, Muramatsu artisans continue this remarkable legacy, combining generations of craftsmanship with scientific research, precision, and a deep love of the flute.

Trevor James instruments

10/31

Trevor James

Since 1984, British flute maker Trevor James has embraced a player-focused approach to instrument design. Every flute is thoughtfully crafted with three priorities in mind: responsive headjoints, comfortable mechanisms, and a sound that develops alongside the musician. This philosophy ensures that Trevor James flutes are designed not only to perform beautifully, but to support and inspire players as they grow.

Sankyo instruments

10/31

Sankyo

Founded in 1968 by Kikuo Hisakura, Hideo Takei, and Taichi Oki, Sankyo began crafting flutes in a small Japanese garage. Its name combines “San,” meaning three, and “Kyo,” meaning sound, honoring its three founders. Today, under the leadership of Kikuo’s son, Yutaka Hisakura, Sankyo artisans continue their founders’ pursuit of musical excellence and the very essence of sound.

Miyazawa instruments

10/31

Miyazawa

Founded in 1969 by Masashi Miyazawa, Miyazawa Flutes combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology. A collaboration with American flutemaker P. L. West helped shape instruments for North American players, while the introduction of the Brögger System™ in 2005 brought new levels of precision and fluidity. Today, Miyazawa continues its pursuit of expressive freedom, embodying its signature philosophy: **The Colors of Sound.**

Hammig instruments

10/31

Hammig

The Hammig family's woodwind-making legacy spans eight generations, beginning in 1780 with German craftsman Christian Gottlob Hammig. In the early 1900s, Philipp Hammig established his own instrument-making tradition, passing his expertise to his son Gerhard and, eventually, the next generation in 1994. Today, the Hammig family continues this remarkable heritage, crafting exquisite piccolos celebrated for their distinctive dark, sweet sound.

The Thread That Connects Us

The ribbon flowing through our Flute Makers Series represents the connections that bring our musical community together. From the imagination and craftsmanship of the makers, through the knowledge and care of those who represent their instruments, to the musicians who give them a voice, we are all part of the same story. Each brings something unique, yet we are united by a shared passion for music, artistry, and the joy of creating something beautiful. **Tradition. Inspiration. Community.**
